Opera Scenes for me, was my baptism by fire into being a costume assistant. The costume designs for each of the eight scenes responded to different eras and environments making the demands of this project high. Executing this as the sole full time assistant within a short time frame and budget of £250 was definitely a challenge! I had to be resourceful and pull costumes from within the college stock, and source predominantly second hand.

Our House was a large scale musical performed by both BA and MA students at the Sherman Theatre. For this production I took responsibility of managing the budget. I also focused on being in all fittings to take fitting photos and make fitting presentations for the designers to show the director. This project was fast paced start to end, with over 100 costumes to source and manage, but it really highlighted to me my love of costume assisting.

I also thoroughly enjoyed dressing this production, due to its fast pace including, less than a minute long quick changes into large 80s wedding dresses, ensemble quick changes, and performing a quick change onstage.

I came onto Amelie the musical late into the realisation process as an assistant not having had the opportunity to read the script or attend a rehearsal before tech began. This production made me highly adaptable as i had to just get stuck in and help the designer and costume assistants with the final jobs before and during tech. This predominantly included alterations, labelling, and adding lace embellishments to the choir costumes.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona was a small scale acting project, of Shakespeare’s supposed first work reimagined to present day rich gap year students. For this production we had a small budget and I took responsibility of managing it as well as the bible. I developed my problem solving skills in sourcing this production and we had to find creative ways to create the illusion of wealth in the costumes.

Spawn was a devised puppet show for the D-Deaf community and catered towards children. The costumes for this production where pajamas in differing shades of blue striped. My role as the sole costume assistant on this production was to aid in the sourcing and dying of the pajamas, sourcing the black plimsoles, as well as doing the washing post each performance.
