THAT LAST SUMMER

Written by Azuka Oforka

The Richard Burton Theatre Company

That Last Summer is a piece of new writing by Azuka Oforka following a childhood friendship group reunited after several years for a member of the group Aaliyah’s funeral. It is a modern play set in a play park where they all used to hang out, which a member of the group, Maya, has summoned them down to during the wake. The play explores themes of responsibility and our actions consequences as well as addiction and social class.

During the design and rehearsal process I worked closely with the actors and director, in the exploration of the characters. I designed the costumes to not only reflect where they are now but how they have changed. I also considered each characters intentions behind coming to the funeral within the costumes, for example Rochelle wearing a mini dress and Louboutin’s to flaunt her success to the group
